History

History of PCI Membranes

PCI Membranes, a part of Filtration Group Company, was a forerunner in the commercialisation of reverse osmosis in the 1960s, with technology developed as a joint venture between Portals Ltd and the UK Atomic Energy Authority for the desalination of sea water. Further development of membranes has led to the broadening of PCI Membranes’ product portfolio to include first ultrafiltration and then nanofiltration membranes and systems.

Originally known as Paterson Candy International (PCI) in 1986 we became the stand-alone business known as PCI Membranes. Portals Ltd sold the PCI Membranes business to Thames Water in 1989 and in 1999 Thames Water acquired Memtech, a membrane business based in Swansea Wales, and integrating it. PCI Membranes’ more recent ownership by ITT Cooperation from 2002 to 2011 and then a part of Xylem Water Solution until February 2017 when it was sold to Madison Industries and became a brand of Filtration Group, with a turnover in excess of $1.4bn.
